The Christmas Gift my son received was a Chess Set. Not an expert in the game myself, it was interesting to relearn the game as I taught John this ancient, battle inspired combat on a game board.
Chess is a complex game. With many pieces wielding different powers, it requires foresight to read the opponents strategy as we plan our own offence. Every move by either player creates different possibilities. Yet, there is one significant part of the game that is most important and will most likely determine the outcome of the game – “The Opening”. While there are different openings, the primary goal is to dominate the game board by bringing out the different pieces into play.
Chess is complex, but it fades in comparison to the complexities of life. It is especially a battle for a Christ follower to fight The World, The Flesh and The Devil. As in chess, the importance of your opening cannot be underestimated. The Grand Masters of Faith, Esther, Daniel and the reigning King, Jesus considered their opening in their ministry. Fasting and Prayer was their initial move and an integral part of their opening. Even before the opposition showed up Esther, Daniel and Jesus opened with Fasting and Prayer. History as recorded in scripture proves it was nothing short of brilliance as the enemy was soundly defeated.
As you consider 2019, consider your opening. Let Fasting and Prayer be that initial move to secure the game board. With the Grand Masters of faith inspiring us from the sidelines it will not be long before you cry out – Checkmate!
