Day 6: Talking to Jesus

By Pastor Prakash Jayakumar (January 14, 2022)

Matthew 6:9-13 (NKJV)

In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

One of the favourite moments of my weekday is driving my kids to school. While getting everyone into the vehicle could sometimes be a task, the conversations during the short ride is often enthralling. The topics can be anything such as bugs caught in the school playground, trading of hockey cards, or goals scored during soccer practice. There is no set agenda as the conversation meanders through different incidents and experiences. Nevertheless, as a father I cherish these interactions as it gives me a peek into the minds and hearts of my children.

Prayer can be intimidating because it is often considered to be a sombre moment of speaking carefully constructed words. But we are allowed to meander through our thoughts as we converse with our heavenly Father. The Lord’s prayer (Matthew 6:9–13) is a perfect example of one such prayer conveying different thoughts and petitions. “Hallowed be thy name” is worship, “Thy Kingdom Come” is aspiration, “Thy will be done” is surrender, “Give us Bread” is supplication, “Forgive us” is confession, and “Deliver us” is warfare prayer. Each phrase of this model prayer expresses a different feeling and experience. It is a prayer that encourages us to be transparent and real with God conveying everything about our life. We have freedom to be unstructured in our conversations with God. Share with him the different aspects of your life because our Father in Heaven is interested in it all. He delights in listening to us.

Dear Heavenly Father! I want to talk to you. Thank You for Listening. Amen!
