Day 5: Faith Like a Child

By Pastor Heidi Jarrett (January 13, 2022)

Deuteronomy 5:33
Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

In full transparency, I didn’t want to fast this year. I certainly did not feel like it. However, God often speaks to me through what our kids are learning. And this month our kids are learning about self-control.  Yes, self-control: choosing to do what you should, even if you don’t want to.  Isn’t that what fasting is? Choosing to use self-control over your physical body in order to focus on your heart or spirit.  Okay God, I hear you, bring on the fast.

Here’s the important thing, I know that being obedient to God will bring blessing, without a doubt! Deuteronomy 5:33 says, “Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.” Even if I don’t feel like it, I know intellectually that obeying God is the wise choice.  And once again, like we teach our kids, I need to make the wise choice!  So I choose to exercise my faith and not live by feelings.   I choose to fast and grow my relationship with God, even if it’s uncomfortable and inconvenient.  And I encourage you to make the wise choice and choose obedience and in doing so receive God’s blessing!

[PRAYER]

Dear God, We choose to obey you.  Help us to choose faith over feelings. Help us to grow our self-control throughout this fast because  we want to know you more.  We love you!  In Jesus’ name, Amen!
