John 15:15 (NIV)
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
When my oldest son was about four years old, we were playing and talking together. I asked him (I think most parents ask this question): what do you want to be when you grow up? He gave me an amazing answer that taught me a lot and I have never forgotten that moment. His response was, “I want to be God’s friend.” Wow!! What joy I felt when I heard that!
In the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 9:6), he says that Jesus would be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus himself says that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. And even still, the Lord Jesus comes to me and you to say that he does not call us a servant, but a friend. What an honour! He calls us friends. Among friends there is sincerity, transparency, respect, mutual knowledge, and a good relationship. Being a friend of Jesus builds, supports, teaches, understands, consoles, comforts, encourages, motivates, and brings life.
Do you want to be friends with Jesus? He has given each of us the clear invitation to be in true relationship with Him.
Father, thank you so much that we have access to you through Jesus. Thank you for what you teach us and tell us: especially that You calls us friends. May our friendship with you Lord grow every day, increasing in us the desire to be together enjoying this wonderful friendship. Amen!
