Day 16: Distracted By What Matters

By Tim Mann (January 24, 2022)

Psalm 119:15-16
I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.

I’ve recently been noticing how distracted I’ve become.  Whether it’s my phone, Netflix, busyness, renovations, etc… The distractions are everywhere!  Some aren’t bad in and of themselves, but so often they come at the expense of spending time with the Lord or other things things that matter.  It leaves us with a choice.

C.S. Lewis says this in “The Weight of Glory”: “It would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about…when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

I feel we are far too easily pleased with our current distractions.  Meanwhile the Lord calls us to set ourselves on Him and the things in life that truly matter.  Psalm 119:15-16 says, “I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.” My prayer during this fast is that the Lord would increase the desire for His word and His precepts.  That I wouldn’t settle for mindless scrolling on my phone, but that I would put it down, engage with my Saviour, and be distracted by what matters most!

[PRAYER]

Dear Lord, as I go through this coming year, increase my desire for the things of You.  Let everything that takes my attention off of You decrease in significance, and help me to focus on Your word and Your ways.  Amen!
