Day 1: As It Is In Heaven

By Stephanie Peterson (January 17, 2021)

As the fast begins this week and you set aside time to press into God’s presence, you may find yourself overwhelmed with where to begin. God has recently drawn my attention to the Lord’s Prayer, where Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray. If you’re like me, you might know this passage in your sleep and find it easy to gloss over without a second thought. When I need a fresh perspective on a verse, I find it helpful to try a different translation:

‘Our Father, dwelling in the heavenly realms, may the glory of your name be the center on which our lives turn. Manifest your kingdom realm, and cause your every purpose to be fulfilled on earth, just as it is fulfilled in heaven. Matthew 6:9-10 (Passion Translation)

The word kingdom can be difficult to wrap our mind around. What does it mean to invite God’s kingdom to earth? I love how this translation asks for “God’s every purpose” to be fulfilled. An easy place to start is to pray for God’s purpose to be fulfilled for our day. We can pray for His purposes for our relationships, our families, and our marriages. We can pray for our church and our nation. And I find that when I invite God into the process, He continues to prompt my heart about what to pray for.

[PRAYER]

Lord, as we embark on the next three weeks of pressing into your Presence through prayer and worship, we ask that you would guide and direct us according to your will. May your every purpose be fulfilled on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
